On 10-13 December 2023, the DSWD Disaster Response Management Bureau (DRMB) in partnership with the United Nations – Food and Agriculture Organization (UN-FAO) conducted a Capacity Building on the Use of Online Mapping Platform and Predictive Analytics for Humanitarian Response (PAHR) Tool at Tagaytay City.
The activity was attended by Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialists from DSWD Field Offices CAR, CALABARZON, V, VII, IX, and Caraga and representatives from the DRMB – Preparedness for Response Division (PRD). The activity provided hands-on training on using the enhanced PAHR tool and the webGIS portal, on top of a series of presentations on related matters (e.g., Anticipatory Action, B-SPARED Project, etc.).
Ms. Leslie R. Jawili, Project Development Officer (PDO) IV of DRMB – Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC), delivered a presentation on the utilization of Geographic Information System (GIS) in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) operations at the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Ms. Maricor Pauline de Guzman, Project Development and Coordination Support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN-FAO), discussed GIS in Anticipatory Action, focusing on the B-SPARED Project. Ms. Avinne Antoinette P. Melarpis, Account Manager of Geodata Systems Technologies, Inc., provided insights into the ESRI Products for Disaster Management.
Ms. Kattleya Marie C. Torrecampo, Community Development Specialist of UN-FAO, presented a brief orientation on the FAO-DSWD Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP/PHI/3807) titled “Enhancing capacities for inclusive disaster risk reduction and management towards adaptive and shock-responsive social protection program amid COVID-19.”
Ms. Diane C. Pelegrino, PDO III – GIS Specialist of DRMB – DROMIC, covered the Online Mapping Platform, while Ms. Lady Lee C. Dimapilis, National GIS Specialist of UN-FAO, delved into the Enhanced PAHR Tool.
The implementation of the Online Mapping Platform and the upgraded PAHR tool marks a significant stride forward in reinforcing the disaster preparedness and response capabilities of the DRMB within the DSWD. This platform empowers the DSWD to make well-informed decisions, optimize resource allocation, and safeguard the well-being of the Filipino people, particularly those most vulnerable to the adverse impacts of disasters.
